Hire a Creative Designer When You Can Just Subscribe to AI?

Back then, if you wanted to create a logo, flyer, website, business card, or even a simple social media visual, business owners had to find a specific creative designer. A UI designer to create website interfaces, a graphic designer for social media visuals, an illustrator for illustrations, an animator for motion graphics or animation, and so on. But finding the right designer was only the first step. Business owners also needed to prepare a proper brief before the project could start. After going through brainstorming sessions and alignment, the design process could finally begin. There would also be review stages that usually resulted in minor or major revisions before the final artwork was delivered.

Today, things feel much and muchh simpler. Just open an AI tool, write a prompt, wait a few seconds, and taraa it’s done! The design is ready.

Beyond visual design, AI development has also helped business owners create copywriting, websites, illustrations, videos, and even digital product prototypes.

And then, a very reasonable question comes up:

If AI can do all of that, why should businesses still hire creative designers?

AI = Too Generic, Lacks a Unique Touch

When a business owner writes a prompt like, "Create a premium coffee shop logo with a modern and minimalist style." AI can instantly provide multiple visual design options. Some may look elegant, some may feel premium, and some may appear modern.

But here is the problem, those same results could easily be generated for another coffee shop. Even when the details are slightly different, the overall visual direction can still feel similar. That happens because AI learns from existing patterns. When we ask for something "modern," "minimalist," "luxury," or "professional," AI tends to generate visuals based on patterns that are already commonly used.

So how can an audience or target market distinguish one brand from another competitor in the same industry? For businesses that only need temporary content, this might not be a major issue. But for businesses that want to build a long term brand, this can become a serious problem.

Uniqueness = A Key Business Asset

Uniqueness is an intangible asset.

A strong brand should still be recognizable even when the logo is not visible. From colors, typography, layouts, illustration styles, photography direction, iconography, motion, to tone of voice, every element needs to connect smoothly to create a unique brand character that differs them from competitors.

To build all of these elements, brands often need more than one type of creative designer. An illustrator might be needed to develop illustration styles or characters. A graphic designer transforms the brand into visual communication. An animator translates the identity into motion. As digital needs grow, UI designers and website developers also play an important role in translating brand identity into digital experiences.

The synchronization of all these elements in both digital and physical, is what eventually creates a strong brand identity. And it doesn’t stop there. Once a brand identity has been established, it needs to be consistently applied across different visuals and brand touchpoints so the audience can easily recognize and remember the brand.

Because at the end of the day, a strong brand is not only about looking good, It’s also about being recognized and remembered.

AI = Lacks Consistency

When relying only on AI, something can look great today but completely different tomorrow.

For example, imagine AI generates a mascot for a brand. The mascot is used on a website and social media. A few months later, the brand needs the same mascot for a new campaign with a different pose. After entering a new prompt, AI generates a character that looks "similar," but the face changes slightly, the proportions feel different, the colors are close but not exactly the same, and the illustration style does not fully match.

Individually, each design might look good. But when placed side by side, they feel like two different characters. It pops up a question, Is the campaign really from the same brand?

The problem is not that the design looks bad. The problem is that when a brand's visual language keeps changing, audiences become increasingly difficult to recognize and remember it. One of the main purposes of brand identity is creating consistency, making sure every visual element feels connected and recognizable.

Consistency is not only about colors or shapes. When an illustration is repeatedly used, for example, designers need to maintain the character, proportions, style, colors, and even small details based on the same visual direction. This becomes even more important when one asset needs to be used by multiple creative specialists across different disciplines.

AI = Limited Multiformat Visuals

Besides generating generic and inconsistent visuals, another challenge appears when a brand grows and requires more assets. The bigger the business becomes, the more brand touchpoints need to be managed.

One common misconception when using AI tools is assuming that if a design can be downloaded, the work is finished. But in professional design, file format and asset structure matter.

Take the mascot example again. For social media, a PNG file might be enough. But when the mascot needs to be used for video animation, websites, packaging, billboards, merchandise, or applications, the requirements change. A single file downloaded from an AI platform might not be enough. Especially when the design needs to be edited, resized, or adapted into different formats without losing quality.

This is where a creative designer's workflow becomes important. Illustrations, for example, can be created using Adobe Illustrator or similar tools to produce vector-based artwork. Because they are vector assets, they can be edited, resized, and adapted for different needs without losing quality. One illustration can support multiple applications without needing to be recreated from scratch/zero.

The same applies to digital products. Today, website designs are commonly developed using tools like Figma, allowing layouts, components, and interface elements to be structured and adjusted more flexibly. When visuals evolve into motion, the same assets can also be developed further using tools like Adobe After Effects, Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, or Blender depending on the complexity of the animation.

With this workflow, a design does not only create one final output. The assets are prepared to be reused, developed, and applied across different formats and needs.

At this point, brands need visual design that is not only beautiful, but also editable, scalable, and flexible.

Creative Designer vs AI

If we only look at the numbers, an AI subscription can be much cheaper than paying designers for every visual need. But long term businesses should not only calculate production costs.

Consider the cost of having an inconsistent brand that is easily forgotten by your audience. Consider the opportunity cost when your visuals fail to differentiate your brand from competitors. Consider the cost of recreating assets because the format is not flexible enough. And most importantly, consider the value of building a brand with a strong, consistent, and recognizable visual identity.

But then another question appears, if a brand needs different creative specialists, does a business owner need to hire an illustrator, graphic designer, animator, video editor, 3D designer, UI designer, and website developer one by one?

Hmm, doesn't have to.

One reason creative agencies can be a more practical option is because they usually have multiple creative specialists with different skills working together under one creative direction. This allows business owners to access different creative capabilities in one place without having to find and manage each specialist separately.
